Start with an honest conversation
Ask your family directly whether anyone wants to run the business. Many owners assume the answer, in either direction, and are surprised.
Passing it on
Keeps it in the family, but often means a lower or slower payment to you, and needs a successor who is ready and willing.
Selling to an outside buyer
Usually gives you a clearer payment and a clean break, and family can still benefit from what you receive.
A mix is possible
Some owners sell to an outside owner who keeps a family member in a role. Talk options through with your adviser and your family together.
Put it into practice
General guidance only, not legal, tax or financial advice.
