Why owners go direct
Selling direct can mean fewer people knowing about the sale, no success fee and a simpler process with one buyer you have chosen.
It can also mean less competition on price, so weigh both sides.
Still use professional advisers
Going without a broker does not mean going without help. A solicitor and an accountant who know business sales are essential.
Check the buyer properly
Ask how the deal will be funded, who makes the final decision and whether they have bought a business before. Ask to speak to someone they have dealt with.
Get the key terms in writing early
Price, how it is paid, your role after the sale and what happens to staff should all be in a short heads of terms before detailed due diligence starts.
Put it into practice
General guidance only, not legal, tax or financial advice.
