Decide who needs to know, and when
Most owners keep early conversations to themselves, their accountant and their solicitor. Staff and customers usually hear once a deal is agreed and a handover plan exists.
Telling people too early can create worry about something that may never happen.
Use a confidentiality agreement
Before sharing detailed financials or customer information, ask any buyer to sign a non disclosure agreement (NDA). A serious buyer will expect this.
Share information in stages
Start with a summary: what the business does, rough revenue and profit. Detailed customer lists and contracts come later, once you trust the buyer and terms are close.
Keep running the business
The most common mistake is taking your eye off the business during a sale. A dip in results can change the deal. Keep trading as if you weren't selling.
